This was a project I worked on during the summer of 2014. I attempted to block-out the entire city of Chicago using BSP brushes in UDK. I followed a screenshot I took from Google Maps, and for the most part, things went pretty well. My major issue was that I forgot about scale and thus the buildings look very odd in comparison to one another. This taught me the importance of scale in environments, as well as modeling from reference. Since all I used was a top-view map of Chicago, I never really got the sense of the exact height/look/feel of the buildings. I eventually abandoned the project since I really wasn’t learning anything, and it was more of an exercise anyway. I picked it back up about a year later to try to use it for a game, but the size and scale of the scene was simply too big. Overall, I’m still proud to look back on it and know that I could commit to a task so large.
